Every bite changes the world: food and sustainability

Target groups: primary and secondary school students, adults. The program of the learning day is customized according to the age and interest of students and the season. Preferably the learning day will be outdoors.
Duration: 3-5 hours
Group size: 10-30 participants
Time of year: from March to November
Goal of the workshop: to show that we influence the world with every bite and that we can change it.
Description of workshop: We all eat every day. At the same time, it is rarely understood that the food readily and cheaply available in supermarkets gets there on the expense of the environment and well-being of people. In this workshop we’ll investigate how our food and eating habits influence the sustainability of the global environment and economy.
The main concepts of food and sustainability are introduced and tied with our everyday life and surroundings in an engaging way.
For example we can learn about the importance of topsoil by making a compost heap. We can learn about the importance of biodiversity by observing local ecosystems. We can think together about what ecologic footprint is or discuss what is ecologic, local and seasonal food by analyzing our breakfast, by preparing lunch together or by tasting different canned weeds during the tea break.
Main concepts discussed:
Ecologic footprint of food, ecosystem, biodiversity and resilience of species, soil and its health, local food, wild edible plants, preserving of food, organic food, monoculture, polyculture, heritage species and seeds, annual and perennial plants.
Practical activities can comprise of making compost and elevated beds, sowing seeds, picking edible weeds or vegetables and preparing food from fresh ingredients. Plus different seasonal outdoor activities. We also offer different games and discussion excercizes related to seeds, biodiversity, local food, etc. We’ll end the workshop with a feedback circle about the content.
Each workshop is designed according to the needs of the group in cooperation with the customer. It is possible to choose more practical or theoretical activities.
Reference to the curriculum: value competence, social and citizen competence, learning and entrepreneurial competence. Concrete activities are agreed separately for each learning day.
As a result of the learning day students will be more conscious of the environmental, economic and social effects of their everyday consumption choices. They will value environment, biodiversity and local food.
